Information

DISCIPLINES
At Monaro Dance Centre we strive to meet the needs of every student,
providing tuition in diverse forms of dance for people of all
ages and capabilities. A brief summary of our teaching curriculum
follows, including information on our Examination syllabi. Please
note that students are not required to enter for examinations.
However, students are encouraged to work to Exam level as a means
of setting and achieving personal goals. Our examinations are
held mid-year at the Cooma Studio.
CLASSICAL BALLET Royal Academy of Dance
Classical Ballet is arguably the most demanding form of dance,
requiring precise knowledge of weight placement, technique and
expression. Students at Monaro Dance Centre are fortunate to have
the opportunity to study under the RAD syllabus. This syllabus
is able to fully develop the finer technical aspects of classical
technique.
In the early grades there is much emphasis on free movement and
mime, developing a sense of rhythm, musicality and expression.
The higher grades strive to refine and strengthen technique. National
Character exercises are introduced in Grade One, teaching the
history and tradition of National Dance from Hungary, Russia and
Poland.
JAZZ / FUNK International Dance Teachers
Association
Jazz/Funk is the collective term we give to a wide range of Dance
styles, encompassing Jazz Ballet, Cabaret, Funk and Hip-Hop. Fun
Jazz classes cover the range of styles, incorporating exercises
that develop
strength and flexibility. Our examination syllabus is based around
the Jazz Ballet style, which is excellent for developing strength
in technique. The syllabus also incorporates music theory with
dance exercises, developing rhythm and musicality. Our teachers
use the latest dance music and classes are
lively and energetic. Jazz dance is an excellent way of improving
co-ordination and fitness.
TAP Glenn Wood Tap Syllabus
Tap is a form of Dance that almost anyone can enjoy. It is extremely
popular among our adult students and we offer a special program
for beginners.
For the younger students we offer a comprehensive examination
syllabus, which teaches correct technique, use of rhythm, musicality,
presentation
and style.
PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAM
We have an exciting Pre-School Dance program for our Tinies.
Classes are designed as two levels to be taken over two years
of classes and are
most suitable for 3-5 year old students, who are just a bit too
young
for our exam classes.
|
The Pre-School classes involve learning various
skills, including Classical Ballet, Jazz Ballet and some
simple Gymnastic exercises. The classes are designed as
a general introduction to dance class and allow our Tinies
to experience different kinds of dance in a fun environment.

SHOW GROUP AND COMPETITION / PERFORMANCE
TRAINING
The Monaro Dance Centre Show Group is made up of students who
show outstanding skills in all facets of Dance and Performance.
The Show Group is regularly invited to perform at private and
community functions across the Monaro and are featured dancers
in our Concerts. Our Show Group has had great success in competitions.
Auditions for the Show
Group are held each year and are open to all students. Those students
wishing to compete individually have the opportunity to do so
at Monaro Dance Centre. We encourage students to participate in
competitions as an excellent way to develop performance skills
and as a sure way of encouraging self-confidence.
MUM'S/DAD'S & BUB'S
For mum's and, or dad's with toddlers that are too young
to join our regular classes but would appreciate some movement
and stretching.
The idea is, the parent comes with the toddler and does the class
also.
Hopefully both parties will benefit in their own special way.
Classes will depend on numbers so give us a call.
CONCERTS
We hold a series of concerts each year which display the work
of our students. Concerts are held in Cooma, Bombala and Jindabyne.
All students are encouraged but not required to participate. The
concert is a means of educating our students in aspects of stagecraft,
costuming, makeup and backstage etiquette, as well as helping
to develop performance skills.
